Lhasa airport receives millionth passenger in 2006
(Reuters) Gongkar Airport, serving Lhasa, received its millionth passenger in one year, the largest number in its history. According to Xinhua, that represented a rise of about a fifth over last year, mainly attributable to growing numbers of tourists. Competition from the Golmud-Lhasa railway opened over the summer has caused air ticket prices to fall, and a pattern is emerging whereby tourists travel by train to the region but leave by plane.
