Tibetan monk stages demonstration in Lhasa
(TCHRD) The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) reports that a lone 23-year-old Tibetan monk staged a short demonstration calling for freedom in Tibet on 03 September 2006 at the Barkhor street in Lhasa. Within minutes, Public Security Bureau (PSB) officials and security personnel deployed by the Lhasa Neighbourhood Committee moved him away from the area. A large crowd of Tibetans witnessed the demonstration, which reportedly took place in the afternoon around 14:40 local time. TCHRD are unable to confirm either the identity of the monk or the location of his detention. It is reported that the monk comes from Nechung Village in Toelung Dechen (Chin: Duiling Deqing) county, TAR. It is also reported that he was formerly a monk at the local Takdrak Monastery before being expelled on political grounds eight years ago.
