Golmud-Lhasa railway to extend to Shigatse
(Xinhua) The Chinese government plans to expand its rail link into Tibet, extending the railroad from Lhasa to its second biggest city, Shigatse (Chin: Xigaze). TAR Chairman Jampa Phuntsog (Chin: Qiangba Punco), said the extension is due to be completed during the period of the 11th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development (2006-2010). He claimed "The world's highest railroad is expected to help further boost economic development in Tibet and bring more benefits to local people". His comments were made at the Tenth National People's Congress.
