40th anniversary of TAR people's congress
(Xinhuanet) A ceremony held at the Tibet Autonomous Region People's Hall in Lhasa marked the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the regional People's Congress. Among the key speakers were Legchog (Chin. Legqog), chairman of the Standing Committee of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) Congress, and Yang Chuantang, secretary of the Regional Committee of the Communist Party of China, who holds effective executive power in the TAR. According to official statistics, Tibetans represent 92.9 percent of the TAR's population, but just 70 percent of the people's congress deputies in the region.
