Rewards for teaching in Tibet
(Beijing Time) An official state organ reports that from 2006 a batch of 1,000 university students and graduates will receive an annual Shanghai city government scholarship of 3,000 yuan (UK£213; US$370; EUR€311) if they volunteer to teach in rural areas or in the country's “underdeveloped western regions”. Another 10,000 young people will be granted an allowance of 150 yuan (UK£10.70; US$18.60: EUR€15.66) per month. Students going to “underdeveloped western regions”, such as Yunnan Province and the TAR, will also receive a government award of 5,000 yuan to 10,000 yuan (UK£357-£714; US$620-$1,240; EUR€522-€1,044) if they agree to work for one or two years. "The scholarship aims to encourage more graduates to devote themselves to the places and industries where talents are needed", said an official with the Shanghai Education Commission.
