Tibetans to renovate Kathmandu stupa
The Tibetan refugee community in Nepal has received permission from UNESCO and the Nepali government to renovate the historic Baudhanath stupa (also know as Boudhanath, Bodnath etc.) in Kathmandu. Under the supervision of Zatrul Trulshig Rinpoche, a Tibetan lama based in Nepal, a religious gathering was held at the stupa to mark the start of the renovation work. In attendance were Nepali and local Tibetan officials and a number of Nepali and Tibetan monks. The president of the area development committee, Krishna Bahadur Lama said he appreciated the renovation work started by the Tibetan refugee community in Nepal and told reporters: “Its been almost a century since this stupa was last renovated, and although this stupa was listed as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site as long ago as 1979, there have been no funds to maintain or renovate it till now”.
